The critical phase. Immigration to Norway from Pakistan 1970-73.

The critical phase is an original sociological analysis of labor immigration from Pakistan to Norway in the early 1970s. The book gives a vivid description of Norway that met the first “foreign workers” and the adaptation strategies they chose in meeting with a society that did not welcome them. The book is an edited version of Aud Korbøl’s dissertation from 1974, which has not been available to the public earlier. It shows how the Norwegian state, the trade union movement, the workforce and the media handled what was considered a massive pressure on borders. Many of the questions raised by Korbøl still characterize the public debate on immigration and integration.
